Throwing shades

Blazers continue to be a cornerstone of pretty much every style. An investment you’ll never regret, a blazer really is the ultimate trans seasonal piece. With everything from cotton bouclé to wool, you’ll find it comes in so many variations of fabric, colour, cut and style that you can load up on them knowing it’s an essential that will always be on point. Another never say die look to carry through the seasons is layering. This translates in multiple ways; a dress layered over another dress or trousers (usually wide leg) will be a firm favourite, and another interpretation that ties in with the 90s looks trending is layering a turtleneck. On its own or under anything, a very fine knit in a super soft yarn will look particularly polished matched with a shirt or tailored suit. For a real statement try a colour lift with your outerwear

Change it up

If you have a corporate lifestyle, then a polished power suit is an autumnal investment – in 2024 it’s going to be hard to get away from the 80s banker trend.
On the bright side, business style dressing has stepped up the elegance factor which makes it altogether more wearable. If you want to take it from the office to beyond, think about minimalist streamlined silhouettes; if a shirt feels too dressy then a buttoned up cardi is one way of opting into the look. Pinstripes have been glammed up and have lost their uptight vibe and are being used in softer shapes for a more feminine, less androgynous feel.  Preppy is very much an autumnal look, not a new one, but slightly reinvented; tiny pleated skirts, open shirt and maybe a sweater – add a tie to bring up to speed. Knitwear is a key part of the season and can be used to really give softness to darker autumnal shades.

Maximum effect

This season a maxi is a must. A key trend, a full-length skirt or dress has been paired with floor sweeping outerwear for a dramatic and very seasonally appropriate look. Moving on to other more wearable looks off the catwalk that have made their way to the street, the timeline has started to shift from Y2K to the early 2010s, which means peplums, ruffles and high low. If you thought you would never revisit any peplums left in your wardrobe then have another look – it’s a really flattering style with the ability to accentuate the waistline and be forgiving in the stomach area. We’re still loving flower power in the form of embroidery cut outs which really do lend themselves to this textural re-boot; this is a fabulous way to update this classic
one-dimensional pattern.

Seasonal flare

The femininity of the Fifties era has been revamped and filtered through for autumn/winter. Oversized petticoats and nipped in waists characterise this aesthetic in most people’s minds, and this period is certainly going to have style notes that infiltrate mainstream. The cropped jacket is one such look, pairing particularly well with a wide leg pair of trousers. Another retro feel is the bow, which will be to this autumn what the rosette is to spring. A strong colour will be a beautiful buttermilk yellow, which is trying its hardest to take precedence over pink, which has reigned supreme for so long. Deep burgundy and plums are shades so well suited to this time of year and tend to be flattering to most skin tones – they also make the perfect foil for brighter contrasts. Watch this space for browns across the spectrum starting to become really big news; while brown can be considered humdrum, it’s coming through as anything but dull, so watch for some chocolate delights.

Assess the old before you add the new.

This phrase is enough to send shivers down the spine of anyone who enjoys the art of bringing their wardrobe up to speed on a seasonal basis. However, the concept of not adding anything new to your collection doesn’t have to mean a veto on all new purchases. What it can imply is simply that by refreshing our memories of what we have, we can better fill the gaps with things we need – or desperately want – but at the same time leaving the way clear to cleverly utilise what we already own.

Organise

Unfortunately, a key part of this process, and one that the more cluttered cupboard owners like myself absolutely dread to be lectured on, is organising your space. Many may remember the world-renowned Japanese queen of clean Marie Kondo, who promoted a frenzied turfing out of anything that didn’t promote ‘joy’ when you looked at it. Incidentally she developed this concept when childless – three kids later she has admitted it’s nigh on impossible to keep to the standards she promoted. Regardless, she does have a point. By going through your wardrobe, you will inevitably find things that are no longer best fitting, tired or you just don’t really like. By culling the dross, you leave more space for the real gems. It’s a proven fact that when we look at excess in our drawers, we tend to just reach for the same items repeatedly. If possible, divide your wardrobe into clear zones, so have the work shirts / pants / skirts
to one side. Other sections could include casual day wear and then eveningwear.

Collate your basics  

Knowing what works for you is not a crime, and it’s not uncommon for people – particularly men – to buy multiple pieces of the same item. Some consider this type of dressing almost like a uniform; Apple billionaire Steve Jobs springs to mind with his simple black turtleneck rolled out on a daily basis. Whilst this
is extreme it may be that your own wardrobe is heavily weighted towards a certain style or colour of shirt, T-shirt, and jumper. To have these fundamental pieces will take the stress out of getting dressed, however it’s more than possible to keep this methodology going, but just throw in one other item in a different colour or cut, to pair up with one of the basics that could give the look a completely different feel. This would then potentially give the uniform basics more versatility and the opportunity to move from day to night, or smart to casual.

Elevate

By identifying game changing pieces amongst your wardrobe, it’s possible to remind yourself where your personal wow lies. It may be that the item speaks to a certain style (boho, minimalist, loud luxury), but whatever it is will be a pointer as to what your new season purchases should be. If you have found that a tailored velvet jacket has been thrashed to pieces but style wise stood the test of time, then this may be the perfect statement piece to reinvest in. Likewise, a maxi dress that makes you feel amazing, that you now feel comfortable dressing down to wear during the day as well as in the evening. This is process is not just about refamiliarising yourself with what you already have, but about successfully planning the new purchases. A very simple form of crop rotation and re-seeding I like to think.

If you like this vibe but feel that it’s too severe for your taste, then play around with the outfit as a whole. Preconceptions are tricky to shake, so when meeting Wendy Simister, with her beaming smile and gentle manner, it’s hard to believe that she’s a businesswoman celebrating 40 years of running her own fashion store, Wendys Boutique. If proof was needed that it’s possible to possess business acumen and the kindest of natures, look no further than Wendy.

The second of four daughters, at just 18 years old Wendy began working in Maison Monique, a local premium ladies' store. With a core value of hard work drilled into her by her parents, it wasn’t long before Wendy thought about owning her own premises. Although young, she had been taught, “With drive and determination you can do anything.” By 21, Wendy had opened her own fashion boutique. With 17-year-old sister Sandy by her side, the doors were opened to the same premises on Eleventh Avenue that Wendys Boutique still operates from today. “We laughed our way through the day, but I remember wondering if we would actually sell anything,” Wendy recalls.

Forty years ago, this area was considered the outskirts of town: “It was all I could afford, but I always thought if people wanted to come shopping they would travel. It was about the experience.” Wendy was clear on her direction and had always appreciated beautifully made clothes; “I wanted things that were different, but that aligned with what I liked as well,” she explains. Trawling Auckland for stock, paid for upfront and brought back in the boot of her car, she says, “I tried to get things that weren’t readily available in Tauranga.” 

From the get-go Wendy had her finger on the pulse, even down to having the foresight it took to build up a database from the very start. “I used to handwrite newsletters to my customers – you just didn’t have the technology. I’ve always tried to personalise everything. Of course, fashion and the business side of things are very important, but above all it’s the people – the customers, the staff, the ones you surround yourself with. Because they’re your network of support and there’s always a seesaw where you need help, or you give help.

Wendy’s strengths undoubtedly lie in inspiring loyalty and continuity in her team. When sister Sandy left to travel 12 years after the launch of the business, her other sister Sally came to work in the back office, and stayed as a sounding board, buying buddy, and PA until her passing last year. Wendy remembers the time her now adult children (Matt and Hannah) were young, being busy business ones. “We very quickly grew to quite a big team. At one point it was all-consuming. There were a couple of times I was asked to franchise but I couldn’t see how I could do that. The biggest component is the people factor, and you can’t just duplicate that.” 

Wendy’s strong bond extends to suppliers and designers; among too many to mention, Loobie’s Story and Trelise Cooper are labels with whom Wendy shares a long history, that has crossed into friendship with owners/designers Laurinda and Trelise. Wendy is emphatic: “Both have just done so much for New Zealand fashion.” Laurinda, she says, has amazing vision when she creates her collections, and Trelise “is so incredibly creative, I hold her in such high regard.” Loyalty and support characterise these relationships – “it’s very much a two-way business with suppliers – and a mutual respect for what the other is trying to achieve. When suppliers went online they were effectively in competition, but you could either take it the wrong way or see it as the way of the future.”

With the advent of the internet came the explosion of online shopping and access to global fashion. Wendy is quick to identify changemakers and will adopt new strategies at lightning speed. Always trying to be ahead of the curve has been a deliberate methodology. I wonder if she’s a risk-taker, which she ponders
for a moment – “Probably, but not too intensely. At the end of each season, I evaluate everything. I take notice of others, but I always want to do something original. I’m already thinking about what hasn’t been done before – which sounds crazy now with the internet. I’m forever grateful I knew instinctively that setting up the online store was the right thing to do. And I’m not scared of change.”

One aspect of Wendy's longevity has been accommodating her loyal clientele and their trend-led needs, while simultaneously embracing a new demographic. Her solution was to open Tilda on Mount Main Street in 2015. I wonder why she didn’t just trade on her already successful name and open a second Wendys, but she says, “I thought that it was a good opportunity to bring in new brands and a younger feel.”

I wonder if she would consider whether she has made many mistakes over
the years. “I’ve made so many! But experience is knowledge. You don’t
learn if you don’t make mistakes. Things might not go as well as you’d hoped, and you must always be prepared for a rainy day. But the great thing about fashion
is that you get the chance to start again each season.” While Wendy may give the impression of having sailed along, buoyed by her naturally sunny personality, it’s clear that her keen mind and intelligence, along with a never-ending thirst for knowledge, have been trusty tools in her toolbox. Far from jaded, she seems as passionate as she would have been 40 years ago, with her joy for the industry as undimmed as her smile. As she says with total conviction: “I love people and I love fashion.”

Brace for a wet and windy winter with the ultimate wardrobe staple - the trench coat. This year outerwear silhouettes are trending as oversized, and while the extra wiggle room is handy for when you need to layer up underneath, upsized can feel just plain big on smaller frames. If you feel like you’re wearing a sack, then look for structure with exaggerated shoulders as an option. Pleats have cemented their place in every capsule wardrobe by becoming more prolific than ever – skirts, shirts, and dresses, you name it, you can find a pleat in it. The beauty of the pleat is that there’s something for everyone, and they’re quick and easy to style. A pleated skirt or dress looks sophisticated with a long blazer or pair a floaty fabric pleat with a heavy jumper for casual. The trick is to pick a pleat width to flatter your figure – an elasticated waist will create more bulk in this area, a dropped pleat less. Skirts themselves are having a hey-day; again, they offer versatility and open up colourways and patterns that you might not usually wear close to your face. Equally fabric that you may feel too ‘evening’ i.e., silk or sequins, can easily be dressed down for day wear in skirt form. It’s hard not to mention leather/faux leather trousers as a staple – now very much a daywear option they are more versatile, and hardwearing, than you would ever have imagined. Wide, straight, or tapered leg, leather is the new denim.

In the pink

There’s so much to love about trends this winter – from the rush to get a fringe cut in (better than Botox it’s claimed) to a huge surge in searches for yellow after the UK Jubilee celebrations. Bright, feelgood colours are in vogue, and pink is most definitely the hue of the season (particularly fuchsia). People can’t get enough of the uplifting nature of this palette: psychologically soothing, it tends to be flattering on all skin tones, and with no age limit on wearing it, it’s hard to resist. If diaphanous pink dresses aren’t your thing, then try sharp tailoring – a pink blazer suit with a simple white vest top or t-shirt and white sneakers is a modern classic. If this is too much, then a colour pop with shoes or bag will do nicely.  



Metallic Moments

Another big look this season is the vest, which can be tied into so many different styles, from preppy knits to boho. Throw on with a skirt, pants or over a dress - super quick, super chic. If there is ever a time to revel in the decadence of molten metal, it’s winter, and this season it’s all about the look of liquid metallics. While gorgeous sequins are perennially popular, the subtle, grown-up feel of a shimmering metallic is contemporary and luxurious all in one. If all over sheen is too much, then look for lurex which can be found woven through everything from knitwear to a basic tee.

The magic of getting to grips with wearing baggy jeans.

I think it’s fair to say that unless you happen to be a Gen Z, most women are currently struggling with the concept of finally retiring their beloved skinny jeans. I must confess that even though I haven’t worn mine for some time, they still haven’t been culled from the wardrobe. A bit like a breakup when it’s hard to know when to finally rip up the photos in case there’s a reunion, many of us have stashed our pairs still within reach. Nevertheless, when Kate Moss – the original pioneer of the skinny jean – moved on, the rest of us were on notice.

Most of the reticence to replace the skinny is simply that unlike a close fit jean, which tends to fit any form - even if, in my case, it involved a fight against the cotton/Lycra mix fuelled saggy bum look - baggy presents myriad style quandaries. Mention the move to baggies and the concerns fly from all directions - too short, too stumpy, too old – unless you are a 5ft 10 beanpole, it can initially seem daunting. In fact, the slouchier look is far more flattering to a far wider spectrum of figures and ages than it initially appears, and as a bonus its comfort levels put it up there with loungewear.

The first difference with baggies, is unlike skinny leg, there is an awful lot of choice. From wide leg to tapered, mom to boyfriend, high waist or low slung – there are many variations on the theme. Which means that there really is something for everyone, no matter body shape or height. Another key factor is there is a huge amount to be said for styling the top half, as well as footwear – these simple things will make the difference between feeling less like Eminem and more like Hailey Bieber.

The high waist tends to be a go-to for the more mature among us – not only will it elongate the legs, but nothing feels better than relaxing those lack lustre stomach muscles and letting the denim do the work. Pair with a knotted satin shirt, a boxy Chanel style jacket or blazer for a sleek look. High waist is also a winner for the younger and tauter of tummy – a loose crop top tee for a casual vibe, or bralette style for evening. Proportion and fit are key – a more relaxed bottom looks chicest with the contrast of a neater top.

When it comes to the fit of the leg if you are shorter and curvier seek out something specific to your shape -multiple brands offer both petite and curvy options (Abrand, Nobody Denim, Good American to name a few). Try to avoid too much fabric through the hips – loose rather than voluminous. Don’t buy a flare that is too long with a view to taking it up, the flare will get lost when shortened and you’ll be left with a bootleg.

Those long of limb and boyish of hip are the perfect candidate for a low rise, as well as the baggy style. Again, style with a silky shirt, this time pick a slightly more tailored look and tuck it in. A skinny belt looks fab with low rise, and if you’re on the shorter side then keep the top simple. Without the high waist to lengthen the leg, footwear becomes more important. While sneakers and chunky boots look fab with relaxed jeans, a stacked heel looks great, or a chunky loafer with added sole.

Ultimately getting in the changing room with an armful of denim is the only foolproof way to find the right amount of baggy for you. And if when all is said and done you prefer a more streamlined silhouette, that’s fine – personal style is always on trend.

Ultra mini

As temperatures start to rise, so will hemlines. The micro-mini has been awaiting its return, and it’s back with a vengeance for spring. With everything from sequin to satin to stretch knit, these miniscule minis are in super statement shades, prints and fabrics, and are ready to pack a punch. Designers are aching to recreate the late 90s vibe, so there’s a smattering of everything replayed - hemlines are frayed, waists are low, and for the more sophisticated feel matching tweed jackets are paired with the teeny tiny skirts.

A bit of fluff

If you’re looking ahead for the perfect transitional statement to take into the new season – then you’ve found it in feather detailing. Feature feathers have been edging back in on the runway for a wee while, and whether a feather accent on a shoe or full marabou jacket, even the most casual outfit can be transported to old school glamour with the addition of a little plumage. 

Colour me pretty

Cast aside your dingy sweaters and bring out the bright, bold colourways. For spring prints are big and boisterous with abstract prints and stripes reigning supreme. While the Breton stripe simply never goes away, horizontal, vertical, or diagonal stripes all feature heavily this spring. Oh, and so much green to come – from lime to grass, this colour will freshen up every wardrobe.

Net worth

Stretchy sheer knits in spring hues have taken off. Ultra-fine and uber comfortable, netted knits are the next step in the ribbed knitwear dress / pant/ skirt-top style that has been trending for the last couple of years. With the netted look coming at us in everything from tops to bags, this is an offbeat fashion that can be styled for day or night.

I love a relaxed shopping experience, and low-level music is a great first step. Good, knowledgeable customer service is a solid second. Then of course there’s the shoes themselves. Artfully displayed on minimalist style shelving, it’s all about the footwear. With a range that, in the words of branding manager Kat Farron, cleverly covers everything from “boots to Birkenstocks, sneakers to slippers, no matter whether you need to fit your feet out for the beach or the office, you’ll find it at Solect.” Catering for men and women, the range has been carefully curated. Here it is most definitely a case of less is more, so rather than sending your brain into anxious overdrive, the premium brands that have made it on to the shelves have done so because of their proven quality, performance, and heritage.

Solect prides itself on listening to its customer, so among the instantly recognisable classics sit some exciting additions. The Buffalo range is 100% vegan, with some of the boots even gaining the PETA tick of approval. While the puffy cloud soles and bouncy vibe is synonymous with the Spice Girls in the 90s, the combination of reimagined retro cool and super ethical has earned these boots and sneakers a space up there with the Dr Martens, Vans, and Timberlands. Adding a new jewel to its crown is paying off for one of Tauranga’s oldest businesses. Peet Jewellers is close to celebrating the first birthday of its elegant and welcoming Willow Street showroom, which has proven to be a hit among a growing customer base.

Until the August 2020 opening of this store, the 50-year-old business had been based upstairs on Wharf Street. Rest assured, traditionalists – that space still remains as both a retail outlet and creative studio/workshop. It’s not unusual for David Peet to pop in to see how his successor, Harry van Heerden, is getting on at the helm of this high-quality jewellery design and manufacturing enterprise, where the Peet name still graces the door.

“That didn’t need to change because it’s not about me, it’s about what we do here,” says Harry, who’s been a jeweller for about 25 years – the last eight as the owner of Peet Jewellers.

Harry has ensured the business’s fine reputation has been maintained, while expanding it to include the Willow Street showroom and twice as many staff members, including two apprentices. Requests for jewellery repairs and unique designs are also on the rise.

Having had hands-on involvement in its design and fit-out, Harry takes special pride in the Willow Street showroom. “I locked myself in for about a month and built what we have here today,” he says.

What we have here includes royal blue walls interspersed with copper panels, sheer blue curtains, bamboo-framed cabinets and counters, chic light fittings and polished concrete floors. Harry’s pooch, Jackson, a papillon-chihuahua cross, particularly fancies one of the blue velvet chairs.

Harry established must-haves when devising the décor. Bamboo was one – he loves its warmth and sustainable qualities. Another was a minimalist and stylish ambience to reflect the business’ mood and culture.

“I’ve designed this space to include a comfortable desk to sit at and talk about jewellery and design; there’s a creative, open and collaborative workspace in the centre for discussing design and repairs; and I wanted the storefront to appear open, merging the outside and inside – hence the cabinets are minimalistic,” he says. “Finally, it was important for me to have a jewellers’ workbench visible, to show that we’re more than simply a jewellery outlet.”

Jewellery design remains a passion for Harry, who completed a goldsmith apprenticeship in South Africa before taking a break to explore other industries. Radiography, marine rigging and a stint leading safaris filled his time before his art form beckoned again. These days, coloured stones are an inspiration, along with making versions of the “bubble ring” often created from customers’ own stones. The ring features a selection of small and usually varied gems, and is a bespoke offering that’s really taking off.

“Over the years, you collect or inherit different jewellery, or you might have an earring that’s missing its friend,” says Harry. “Or it could be that you have a ring that’s fragile and nearing the end of its life, or that involves a setting you no longer like. We suggest creating something new to incorporate these – and one way of doing that is a bubble ring.”

Bubble rings can be created from new gems too, with some of the combinations including white and yellow diamonds, sapphires, rubies and emeralds. Harry tells of designing one for a customer made from own and her mother’s diamonds. “She was in tears, because she feels she now has her mum close to her all the time. We see a lot of customers cry with joy!”

Many of Peet Jewellers’ customers are mature people who are buying for a significant birthday or anniversary, or using inherited money to splash out a bit. “We can make anything jewellery- related,” says Harry. “One of the more unusual things we’ve made is a ring out of volcanic granite rock.” Peet Jewellers also offers on-the-shelf pieces ready for purchase, and a range of estate jewellery. As for what’s trending? Simpler designs, yellow gold, and big, coloured stones.

And as for where Peet Jewellers is heading, Harry anticipates opening yet another retail outlet and enjoying many more creative days pushing design boundaries to ensure their customers keep saying “Wow”.

In February 2020, fashion retailer Wallis made the call to close its doors after 30 fabulous years of dressing local women in New Zealand-made clothing. Anna Mountford and her parents Carol and David handed over the keys to their Devonport and Mt Maunganui stores, and got to thinking about what to do next. Seven months later, Anna relaunched Wallis at a brand new site at the Mount.

"I seriously considered going into education, but in the back of my mind, I was always thinking about a shop of my own,” she says. “I thought my friends would be really shocked when I told them, but they weren't. They all said, 'Thank goodness!’"

With hangers and mannequins still in her garage after closing Wallis before lockdown, things fell into place really quickly.  Anna rang around her suppliers and picked up the relationships again, and the perfect new location came up on Maunganui Road. "We've had a fantastic start,” says Anna. “Lots of our key labels had been optimistic about the future and cut extra stock, so we had some beautiful pieces to open with. Every day people come into the store and say they’re pleased Wallis is back.

"It felt like the right time to close, then it felt like the right time to open,” she continues. “I’ve able to put my own touch on things, like the styling of the shop, but we still have the same core beliefs. We care about the people who make, sell and wear our clothes, and as we’ve done for 30 years, we stock local labels. It's easy to support local when the quality is this good."
